No. While fetal alcohol syndrome can lead to low birth weight, poorly developed motor coordination and decreased intellectual capacity it is not the most severe damage that can occur to the developing fetus. Exposure to the AIDS or Rubella viruses, drugs even prescription ones such as thalidomide can be much more harmful than alcohol. However, we should not down play alcohol because it is probably the most wide spread abuse that can occur to a fetus and with education perhaps the one that is the most easily preventable.
