Check List of Native and Introduced, Naturally Persisting Vascular Plant Taxa of the Chignecto Region of Southeastern New Brunswick

This list was compiled by H. Harries from his own observations between 1963 and 1986 and from specimens in the Mount Allison University Herbarium. It includes 654 species known to occur within the area plus an additional 12 species placed into square brackets [ ], to indicate an uncertain status. It is probable that more species remain yet to be discovered but it can be assumed that the total will remain below 700, unless a narrow species concept is used for taxonomically difficult groups such as Rubus  sect. Eubatus .

The word introduced denotes those species which are assumed to have arrived in the area only after agricultural settlement in 1671. There are 182 such species, accounting for 28% of the total flora. This estimate is a conservative one. A considerable number of the remaining species, assumedly native to Northeastern North America are within the border area restricted to man-made habitats. Such species include Apocynum androsaemifolium, Aster lateriflorus, Crataegus chrysocarpa, Geum rivale, Platanthera lacera , Lobelia inflata, Prunella vulgaris, Rhus typhina, Spiranthes lacera, and others. Thus it appears likely that the introduced component contributed as much as 30 to 40% of the total flora.

Symbols have been used to indicate life forms: W for woody plants, H for herbaceous perennials, A for annuals and biennials. The number in brackets after the family name indicates the identification number used in Roland's Flora of Nova Scotia, third edition.   Species names in blue/purple are linked to images of the species A family index is available by clicking on this icon .
