 BIOGRAPHICAL OVERVIEW

  Dale D. Ellis received his B. Sc. in Mathematics and Physics in 1970 from Mount Allison University in Sackville, N.B.  He received his M. Sc. and Ph.D. in theoretical nuclear physics from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, in 1971 and 1976 respectively. From 1977 to 2013 he was employed at Defence Research & Development Canada’s Atlantic Research Centre (formerly DREA) in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and has served as Leader of the Modelling and Systems Analysis Group.  From 1990 to 1994 he was a Principal Scientist and Group Leader at the NATO Undersea Research Centre in Italy (originally called SACLANTCEN, then NURC, currently CMRE).  His main research efforts have been in numerical modelling of shallow-water propagation and reverberation, and using the predictions to interpret data gather at sea.  He has participated in approximately 20 sea trials, many of them international collaborations. He is the author of over 80 journal publications, conference papers (many invited), and laboratory publications. His current research activities include developing active sonar and scattering models, and collaborating internationally on rapid environmental assessment techniques and interpretation of reverberation data.  He is a member (a Fellow since 1988) of the Acoustical Society of America, the IEEE Ocean Engineering Society, the Canadian Acoustical Association, and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. From 1999–2002 he was the Canadian National Leader for a five-nation sonar technology panel (TTCP MAR TP-9), and from 1998–2006 he was Canadian National Liaison Officer for the NATO Research Centre. He was a member of, and sometimes primary point-of-contact, for various Joint Research Projects between Canada, US and the NATO Research Centre. Since 2003 he has been awarded grants from the US Office of Naval Research, and has spent 2–3 months each year as a visiting scholar at the Applied Research Laboratory of The Pennsylvania State University. He remains active in underwater acoustic research, and is an adjunct professor in the Department of Physics at Mount Allison University and the Department of Oceanography at Dalhousie University.
