Supporting Dossier for the Tucker Teaching Award

While reflecting the principles of excellence that distinguish teaching at Mount Allison, the contents and format of the Tucker dossier are modeled after and aligned with those for the Association of Atlantic Universities' Distinguished Teaching Award, for which the Tucker recipient becomes the University's nominee in a subsequent year. As a result, the dossier requirements may change slightly from year to year; those re-submitting dossiers should take care to ensure that they are in line with the most up-to-date guidelines.
Nominations for the Tucker Teaching Award are normally valid for two or three years; all nominees will be asked if they are willing to let their names stand for a subsequent year and will have the option of updating their dossiers to reflect recent activities and accomplishments and to accommodate any modifications in the nomination criteria.
The material created by the nominee (Sections 1-5) should not exceed 20 numbered pages in length. Please also note the following:
- Please use 12-point Garamond font and standard one-inch margins all around.
- The original nomination letter and letters of support from colleagues and students, while forming part of the official dossier, are not included in the 20-page limit.
- Your dossier must not include URLs to supporting material.
- The section containing students' written comments (see #6 below) is not included in the 20-page limit.
1. A summary of activities and achievements related to teaching: A one-or two-page summary, in list or abbreviated CV format, which highlights your key achievements: for example, all courses taught in the last five (5) years, teaching innovations, teaching- or curriculum-related committees, academic advising, etc. You should indicate and explain those courses which you have developed and those which you have significantly re-structured (especially if the course number has remained the same while the content, instructional strategies, and learning outcomes have changed).
2. A one- or two-page teaching philosophy statement: Dated, including details of how this philosophy has been implemented and how it is evidenced by the other materials in your dossier. Use your philosophy statement to explain, for example, why you have chosen to teach in a particular way, what values or principles underpin your teaching choices, and what your future teaching plans are.
3. Material evidence to support the case for teaching excellence: This evidence will vary from nominee to nominee, but try to provide material that enables the Selection Committee to understand your discipline and what is unique about your teaching. Possible evidence includes course syllabi, sample assignments or handouts (you may include links to online material), descriptions of innovative assignments, teaching workshops attended or presented, participation in academic advising, use of formative teaching evaluation, and so on.
4. Any other material you feel would be helpful to make your case.
5. Teaching Evaluation Data:
a) Provide a table that contains the following information:
- All courses taught during the most recent two years of teaching responsibilities (allowing for sabbaticals and leaves)
- The enrollment for each course
- The number of students who responded to the evaluation questionnaire in each course
- The mean rating for the question "Overall, this person performs effectively as a university teacher." (i.e., question #11 in the standard Mount Allison evaluation form)
b) Write a paragraph (approximately 250-300 words) that helps the Selection Committee in its understanding of the evaluation data. For example, what patterns or trends emerge in the data? What accounts for irregularities or anomalies in the ratings for a particular course?
6. Students' Written Comments (Note: given varying class sizes, this section is not included in the 20-page limit for the dossier)
a) Please provide complete sets of student comments from two of the courses listed on the table in part 5a.
b) In a paragraph or two (approximately 300-350 words), describe the two courses you have chosen, provide the rationale for their inclusion, and explain how you have responded to, applied, or otherwise dealt with the student feedback in these courses.
7. Current letters of support
- Two (but no more than three) letters from present or former students
- Two (but no more than three) letters from colleagues or peers
- Nominees may solicit the letters themselves, or their nominator or Dean may do so on their behalf.
- The letters should be evidence-based, containing concrete examples of the nominee's noteworthy characteristics, activities, and contributions to teaching and learning.
- Though the Committee prefers up-to-date letters of support, they recognize this is not always possible for nominees; therefore, they will accept letters up to 18 months old.
- Nominees are respectfully reminded to limit their portion of the dossier, numbers 1-5 above, to 20 pages
- In exceptional circumstances--if a substantial piece of work does not fit within the dossier format--one copy only may be submitted with the dossier for the Committee to view.
