2015 Mansbridge Intern Hannah Fazio with Chancellor MansbridgeMount Allison University is pleased to acknowledge the support of Peter Mansbridge, our University Chancellor, honorary degree holder, and CBC News chief correspondent, through the establishment of the Mansbridge Internship. It is meant to provide Mount Allison students with a unique leadership opportunity, which fosters the attitudes, abilities, and skills essential to active participation in an increasingly globalized and interconnected society. The Mansbridge Internship builds on the academic and extracurricular interests of students; enriches their academic and experiential learning; and creates opportunities for them to advance their leadership competencies through self-discovery, personal and interpersonal growth.
Each year the Internship provides $10,000 to a student in his or her third year of academic studies to help defray the costs of a pre-professional experience with an international organization of the student’s choosing. Funds are meant primarily to cover travel costs and living expenses associated with working or researching abroad. Previous recipients have volunteered with international non-profits and conducted stem-cell related research at a world-renowned facility. Interns are responsible for all aspects of their internship, including meeting the requirements of the sponsoring organization, if any, and arranging public presentations/implementation of educational programming upon their return to Mount Allison.
This award is open to students from any discipline.

  • 2012Lia D’Abate of Montreal, QC — carried out stem cell research at Stanford University
  • 2013Sarah McNeil of Huntsville, ON — travelled to Indonesia to work with the Dejavato Foundation, an Indonesian-based NGO that provides social services through an international volunteer network; and Margaret Kromminga of Grand Rapids, MI — volunteered in Zambia with a focus on HIV/AIDS education and awareness, youth leadership and development, and practical skills training for youth
  • 2014 Graham May of Powell River, BC — travelled to Greenland and Canada’s Artic to study resource management, development, and practices
  • 2015Hannah Fazio of Lewiston, ME — worked as an intern at the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, which provides aid and sustainable solutions for refugees, victims of conflict, and stateless people around the world
  • 2016 — Willa McCaffrey-Noviss of Toronto, ON — volunteered at a hospital's palliative care unit in Mysore, India
  • 2017 — Myfanwy Jensen-Fellows of Acton, MA — worked as an intern at the Womens' Foundation of Nepal in Kathmandu, Nepal


Selection Criteria  

  1. Margaret KrommingaStudents must be in their third year of studies at the time of application or in the third year of studies during the period of the internship. In exceptional circumstances students who have not reached third year standing may be considered; students who are not returning to Mount Allison upon completion of the internship are ineligible.
  2. Students must have a minimum SGPA of 3.2 in the year preceding application, and a TGPA of 3.2 in the semester prior to application; applicants will provide an unofficial transcript.
  3. Students must provide a description of an internship plan that they have designed and prepared, which stems from an innovative field of experience or research and is not simply a continuation of an existing internship, employment opportunity, or research project;includes a service component that sees the intern partnering with an acceptable organization and travelling to a community outside the student’s normal experience; includes an explanation of how the host organization reflects the goals, ideals, and values of Leadership Mount Allison; incorporates an assessment plan that explains how the intern will demonstrate what he or she has learned; demonstrates how the student will be challenged to reflect critically on, integrate, and apply the knowledge and experience gained.
  4. Students must also provide a draft budget that details the cost of the internship including travel, accommodations, living expenses, etc. 

Sarah MacNeilUpon Completion of the Internship
Once the internship finishes, the adjudication committee requires a 5-6 page summary report of the intern’s experience, a financial report, and a learning assessment. The student must also give a public lecture to share the results of his or her experience. These documents must be submitted within one month of the internship being concluded. Failure to do so may result in the revocation of the internship and return of funds provided. The lecture must be delivered within one month of the end of term in which the internship was conducted.

Leadership competencies

  • Personal development. This may include the acquisition of skills such as accessing and critiquing sources of information, ethical reasoning and decision-making, oral and written communication skills, critical thinking and problem-solving, cultural competence, goal setting, visioning, and risk-taking.
  • Interpersonal development. This may include recognition of the influences on leadership of multiple aspects of identity, such as race, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, class disability, nationality, religion, and ethnicity.

An appropriate organization:

  • has a vision, mission, goals and values that align with those of Leadership Mount Allison, e.g. we value and encourage participation by individuals of any race, ethnicity, nation or origin, first language, socio-economic status, gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, religion, age, and/or ability;
  • facilitates opportunities for the intern to engage actively with the local community and provides formal/informal support and mentorship for the student;
  • works to ensure that the cross-cultural interaction is an enriching experience for the intern;
  • provides formal or informal opportunities for the intern to understand local issues within a cultural and/or socio-historical context.

Monica JepsonLearning Assessment Plan
A good learning assessment plan includes:

  • a statement on learning objectives for the internship and an explanation of what steps students will take to achieve them, e.g. identify the knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, or behaviours you aim to acquire through the internship;
  • a statement on learning outcomes, e.g. what should you know and be able to do by the end of your internship;
  • an explanation of how students will track their learning, e.g. writing weekly reflections on the progress of the internship (which may be incorporated in the final report) that allow students to adjust their learning goals and outcomes where necessary or to reflect on the challenges they encounter;
  • an explanation on how students will integrate and apply the knowledge they acquire.
