Mount Allison receives $250,000 donation from Genstar Development
12/19/2014 3:37:50 PMSACKVILLE, NB — Mount Allison University received an early holiday gift with the announcement of a $250,000 donation from Genstar Development Company (Canada) and GDC Communities in support of the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts.
Made in honour of the late Purdy Crawford, past chairman of the board at Genstar and Mount Allison graduate and former University chancellor, the gift will help establish a maintenance fund for the new facility, officially opened earlier this fall.
“We wanted to do something in Purdy’s name that we knew would be important to him,” says Frank Thomas, Chief Executive Officer of Genstar Development Company and GDC Communities. “My visit here makes it easy to see why he was so passionate about Mount Allison. The Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts is a spectacular facility, something that benefits the entire community and such an appropriate way of honouring him. We are so pleased to be a part of it.”
The Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts is one of the top arts education facilities in the country. Officially opened in Fall 2014, the Centre provides specialized facilities for teaching, performance, and creative pursuits in Fine Arts and drama, drawing on Mount Allison’s long and talented history in these areas. The 50,000-square-foot, $30-million facility, funded primarily by private donations, includes specialized studios and classrooms, as well as a 100-seat teaching theatre, making it a valuable resource for both the University and surrounding community and region.
“Mount Allison’s success story, like Purdy Crawford’s and Genstar’s, is founded in its people — our students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, and friends,” says University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Robert Campbell. “We thank Mr. Thomas and Genstar for their generous contribution to the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts, supporting the continued success and growth of our entire community.”
