Delivery and installation of the new CFI/NBIF funded Hitachi SU3500 Variable Pressure SEM and Oxford AZtec Energy EDS sytem
occurred in November and is nearing completion. Research projects are already underway with the new instrumentation. An Open House
planned for 2016 to showcase the new features and capabilities of the equipment.

DMF generated SEM image of various diatoms demonstrating their size variation appears on the cover of the virtual issue
of Journal of Plankton Research, organized by Associate Editors Beatrix Beisner and Zoe Finkel. This collection of papers
focusing on plankton functional traits and functional group modelling, is
freely available.

of Journal of Plankton Research, highlighting the research article "The diversity of diatom assemblages in ships' ballast sediments;
colonization and propagule pressure on Canadian ports" by MC Villac, I Kaczmarska and JM Ehrman
(available online).

Yet again, the DMF generated SEM image of a human white blood has been used for
education/entertainment. This time the image appears in the iOS app
"Cosmic Eye". A demonstration of the app
is available on YouTube. The colorized version of this image
has been used again by NIH/NIGMS, appearing in the article "Cell Migration: Right and Wrong Moves", available at both
the NIGMS website and on
LiveScience.com.
