APPENDIX B - THE MARY MELLISH ARCHIBALD MEMORIAL LIBRARY COLLECTIONS POLICY

The MMAML, established by Raymond Clare Archibald in memory of his mother, Mary Mellish Archibald, was begun in 1908.  The endowment which furthers the work of this collection was established by Dr. Archibald in 1952.

The book collection of the MMAML is housed as a separate collection on the third floor of the R.P. Bell Library, while the serials and recordings are housed with materials in similar formats in other parts of the Library.  Very early imprints are housed in the Rare Books Room.

The Collection is one which is focused on legends, folk arts, folk literature and traditions and folk music, particularly in the Anglo-American folk song and ballad traditions.  It also contains classics of children's literature, particularly in the genre of the fairy tale and fable and a good collection of art song, which was of particular interest to Dr. Archibald.  Collection strength lies in Canadian subjects and this will be continued, with an attempt also to purchase material on world folklore in order to round out the collection.

Material is purchased in book, serial, video and audio formats.

The indexing sources which best service this material are the MLA, American History and Life, Historical Abstracts, and the Humanities Index,
