Joanna Close: Documenting the Farm

8 September - 10 December

Documenting the Farm is a series of textile works by Nova Scotia based artist Joanna Close that commemorate a farm that no longer exists as a physical place.

The hooked rugs document the farm where the artist’s mother grew up. The property was granted to Close’s ancestors in 1858 and remained the family farm until 2011 when it was sold to the neighboring gravel quarry, as it is difficult to make a living from a small rural New Brunswick farm.

The rugs capture the memory of Close’s family’s farm, pay tribute to and celebrate farm life and also speak the to a changing rural culture in the Atlantic Provinces.
