He had a presence around campus like a magnetic force. He died in February in China. He had received funding for an ESL school and was on his way to becoming a Mount Allison success story. Friends, acquaintances, Allisonians, you have lost the best man I knew. His friends are seeking to erect a tree in his honour on campus and we are seeking donations from alumni. Please contact Carolle de Ste-Croix at cdestecroix@mta.ca to donate. Flora Ellen (MacGregor) Beckett (’60) Submitted by Lesley Balcom (’85) Flora was a life-long member of the Mount Allison community, growing up on York Street as the daughter of Frances and Donald MacGregor (beloved physics professor.) She embraced life as a Mount A student, making life-long friendships, earning her Gold A, and delivering the valedictory for the Class of ’60. After graduation she taught in Scotland, returning to New Brunswick in 1966 with husband Barry and two children. Flora is remembered by all for her warmth and kindness. UNBSJ, where she taught math for over 20 years, recently named The Flora Beckett Math Help Centre in her honour. She is survived by her husband Barry Beckett, children Lesley Beckett Balcom (’85), Stephen Beckett, Alex Beckett (’90), eight grandchildren, brother Donald MacGregor, sisters Mary (MacGregor) Alexander (’50), and Margaret (MacGregor) Brown (’54). Donald Cameron (’50 LLD ’89) Registrar emeritus Donald Cameron (’50 LLD ’89) passed away on Oct. 12, age 92. Don divided his time between Pictou County, NS and Sackville and enjoyed careers as a farmer and educator/administrator at schools throughout Nova Scotia. He returned to Sackville in the 1950s to teach in the University’s education department and served as university registrar from 1959 until his retirement in 1986. He is also a past member of the University’s Board of Regents and University Senate. Upon his retirement, in recognition of his long and distinguished service, the Donald A. Cameron Student Loan Fund from which students with financial need and good academic standing might be able to obtain assistance, was established. Don had many Allisonians in his family, including all four of his children — Ian (’76), Jean (’78), Maura (’79), and Alex (’82) — as well as several of his grandchildren and extended family members. He is survived by his wife Margaret (Farquhar), his children, and grandchildren. This list is compiled from information sent to University Advancement May 16, 2013 to Oct. 15, 2013. The alumni office receives official obituaries for our database records. Please feel welcome to also submit personal memories/tributes of departed Allisonians you have known and loved, and we will be happy to print short versions in the Record and longer versions online.
